Hace unos días, uno de mis deportistas más jóvenes me pedía que le aconsejara sobre su primera bici de carretera.
Omar, así se llama el joven en cuestión, está empezando con esto del triatlón y hasta ahora había estado alternando la BTT y una bici de carretera prestada. Pero ha llegado el momento de adquirir su propia flaca.
Tras dar un primer vistazo, me pasó un anuncio de una bicicleta en venta, en concreto una Fuji D6, que le había llamado la atención. Dicha bici es específica de contrareloj, o lo que en el mundillo del triatlón se conoce como “cabra”. Sin ver nada más, me apresuré a comentarle que se olvidara de la misma, pues no se adapta a sus necesidades.
Esta duda que se le plantea a Omar de qué bicicleta elegir es continua en la gente que se inicia en el ciclismo o en el triatlón, por lo que en las siguientes líneas daré unos cuantos apuntes de cómo elegir la bici que mejor se adapte a cada uno y a la actividad que va a practicar.
¿Qué tipo de bicicleta necesito? ¿Montaña, carretera, contrareloj? o lo que es lo mismo ¿gorda, flaca, cabra?
Dependerá del tipo de deporte que vayas a practicar. Si necesitas una btt entras en un mundo nuevo, un tema que trataremos más adelante en otro post, diferenciando entre: rígidas, suspensión delantera, doble, 26”, 27,5” o 29”, etc.
Si lo tuyo es el ciclismo de carretera deberás elegir entre una bici de aluminio, de carbono, con tales o cuales componentes…
Y si te dedicas al triatlón deberás analizar cuales son las pruebas en las que sueles participar, para que tu bici cumpla el reglamento.
Como norma general, en pruebas en las que está permitido el drafting (ir a rueda) la bici debe ser similar a la de ruta o carretera, con el manillar clásico,pudiendo llevar unos acoples, siempre que vayan unidos por las puntas y que su longitud no supere la linea imaginaria que une las 2 manetas de freno.
Si por el contrario no está permitido el drafting (hay que dejar cierta distancia con el resto de participantes) sí que se puede usar una bicicleta tipo contrareloj o aero, con manillar específico y acoples más largos.
Además del tipo de manillar y acoples, hay bastante diferencia entre una bici de ruta y una de contrareloj, sobre todo en su geometría, por lo tanto cada una es específica para lo que se va a usar.
Resumiendo mucho: si participas en pruebas cortas (sprint, olímpico,…) bicicleta de ruta y si tus pruebas son la media y larga distancia, puedes plantearte adquirir una cabra.
¿Que material elegir? Los materiales más comunes son aluminio y carbono. La principal diferencia estriba en la ligereza del carbono y el mayor coste del mismo. Las bicis de gama media-alta suelen venir en carbono, así que dependerá de lo que estés dispuesto a invertir.
¿Y en cuanto a los componentes? Hay 3 marcas principales (Shimano, Sram y Campagnolo) y cada uno con diferentes gamas. A mayor gama menos peso de las piezas y mayor precisión en las transmisiones. Entre las marcas no soy capaz de decantarme por una u otra. Personalmente uso Shimano, pero las otras 2 ofrecen la misma calidad que ésta.
Con lo que sí que habría que andar con cuidado es que todos los componentes encajen, no mezclar Shimano con Campagnolo por ejemplo (Shimano y Sram sí se llevan mejor). He visto a gente comprar unas ruedas nuevas con nucleo Campagnolo y no poder usarlas por llevar en su bici Shimano.
¿Cuál es mi talla? si realizas la compra en una tienda especializada seguramente te puedan asesorar sobre cual es tu talla ideal, pero si adquieres tu bici por internet o de segunda mano será bueno tener una pequeña guía de como averiguar tu talla.
El procedimiento más habitual consiste en medir la longitud de la entrepierna (descalzos) y multiplicarlo por 0,65. Para calcular esta medida nos colocaremos pegados a una pared, de espaldas y colocaremos un libro entre las 2 piernas y tan alto como se pueda (simulará nuestro sillín). Marcamos el borde superior del libro y medimos la distancia hasta el suelo.
El resultado de esta operación nos dará la longitud del tubo vertical, que es como suelen tallarse las bicis.
Talla bicicleta de carretera: Longitud de la entrepierna x 0,65.
Si lo que buscamos es una BTT:
Longitud de entrepierna x 0,50 (si la talla viene dada en cm)
Longitud de entrepierna x 0,21 (si la talla viene dada en pulgadas)
¿Nueva o segunda mano?
Esta decisión dependerá de las posibilidades de cada uno. Comprar cualquier cosa nueva tiene sus ventajas evidentes: estrenar el producto, garantías, poder elegir tallas, colores, etc. Sin embargo, hay un mercado de segunda mano tan amplio que podríamos encontrar bicicletas muy apetecibles.
Mi consejo en este sentido es conocer la procedencia y uso que se le ha dado a la bici, para evitar que nos quieran engañar, vendiéndonos un producto defectuoso, con alguna tara oculta… Si conoces personalmente al vendedor mejor o si buscas en foros especializados se puede conocer la reputación del vendedor. Personalmente he comprado muchas veces a través de foros y afortunadamente siempre con buen resultado. La clave es buscar sin prisas aquello que se ajusta a nuestras necesidades y comparar con lo que nos ofrecen otros.
